Getting to know United Kingdom

Four nations on one island — and a neighbor next door

The United Kingdom is made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and each has its own identity, accent and traditions. London is the natural starting point — palaces, world-class museums (most of them free), theater in the West End and neighborhoods from Notting Hill to the South Bank. Beyond it lie some of the most beautiful countrysides in Europe.

A classic first trip pairs London with the rolling Cotswolds, Roman and Georgian Bath, and medieval York, then heads north by train to Edinburgh and the Scottish Highlands. Wales offers castles and national parks, and many travelers add Northern Ireland's Giant's Causeway or cross to the Republic of Ireland for Dublin and the west coast.

For American travelers the UK is an easy first trip abroad: no language barrier, excellent trains and a shared history — although they drive on the left, and the weather can change by the hour. Guided tours are especially popular here, as they handle the countryside driving and the castle-to-castle logistics.

Planning notes

Planning notes for the United Kingdom

  • Rail is the way to travel. Trains connect London with Bath, York and Edinburgh; advance fares save money, and a BritRail pass suits longer trips.
  • Driving is on the left. Many visitors prefer a guided tour or private driver for the countryside and the Highlands.
  • Plan around events. Edinburgh in August and London during major royal or sporting events book up fast.
  • Entry requirements. The UK now requires an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) for U.S. visitors — check current requirements; we confirm them for you.
